What wedges will you be wearing this spring/summer and with what outfits do they work?
The sunshine is finally out and whilst we know from experience that it may not stick around for very long – I’m giving it til about mid-April (and that’s me at my most optimistic!) – it does give the opportunity to finally free our feet, shoulders and legs from the cocoon of boots, tights, over-the-knee socks, capes, scarves and mountainous layers of winter.
We’re focusing on womens shoes today, with the help of Next UK, and we’re going to take our gaze most directly to one of spring (and summer)’s most-loved styles: the wedge.
This season we’ve seeing slip-on mules come back in fashion for the ultra-snooty types who don’t have to do any walking around. Well, wedges are still going strong and unlike mules, they don’t fall off if you attempt to move faster than a sedated elephant.
This summer there’s also going to be a lightness to the accessories world – inspired by the speed and agility of the Olympics no doubt, but also the shades and shapes of nature, we’re seeing bags and wedges carrying bright colours.
One trend that’s up and coming for this year is cork wedges – a true life-saver in terms of style and comfort. As well as the twined espadrilles as a base, Next’s wedges are also coming with a cork wedge and complementary colours for the upper.
Especially good for weddings and accessorizing this season’s patterns (tropical, 1970s psychedelic or ultra-feminine crochet and broderie anglaise styles), tan and nude leather uppers in strappy and peep toes give a casual elegance and height to your summer outfits.
We’re very keen on the texture too – this is another key style note that Next are particularly promoting with the latest collection – think raffeta, canvas, natural, almost coarse and dense fabrics that give an element of the sea or the forest.
For party times, you’ll want to go for this season’s hottest bright – yellow. The brave can team it with the season’s boldest clothing colour – cobalt blue. We love Next’s Citrus Extreme Wedges, which give you a limey-yellow that isn’t too acidic that it won’t go with anything. With a cute peep toe and a towering wedge heel, it is screaming for a dinky playsuit or some very short shorts…
