5 Neat and Unusual Things to Do in Williamsburg

Williamsburg, Virginia is a great place to visit, no matter what type of entertainment you’re looking for. If you want to hit some of the local spots and hidden gems in the area, you’ve come to the right place. Take a look at these five hidden spots in Williamsburg, Virginia you don’t want to miss.

The Secret Garden

Head to Colonial Williamsburg and take a tour of the garden of an 18th century home. Only the wealthiest colonists had different gardens for vegetables, herbs, and flowers; walk along these paths to see beautiful landscapes of various colored plants and foods, from wildflowers to rosemary to peas.

Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum

The unique folk art museum is the first of its kind, offering various exhibitions of American folk art showcasing subjects like dollhouses, ship paintings, quilting, and folk music instruments. Abby Aldrich Rockefeller originally donated the 424 objects, but the museum now has a collection of more than 3,000 objects. The museum is open 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM Monday through Friday.

Josiah Chowning’s Tavern

If you want to try Colonial-era gambols, head to the 18th-centuary ale house, Josiah Chowning’s Tavern. The tavern is one of the hidden gems in Williamsburg; stop in and sit at the tables that remake the spirit of an alehouse via candlelight. Sing along, play tavern games, watch magicians, and enjoy jokes told by costumed servers. Come hungry and order some delicious food from the menu that features items like barbeque, Shepherd’s Pye, Welsh Rarebit and Brunswick Stew. The tavern is open all day, 7 days a week, and the table games start at 5:00 PM.

Williamsburg Winery

Many people think of Napa Valley in California and Martha’s Vineyard when they think of wine. What very few people know is that Virginians have made wine dating back to the colonial days. The 300-acre Williamsburg Winery uses an advanced cross-flow filtration system to help make wine with great character. Visit the expanse of rolling hills on the southern side of Williamsburg proper for tastings and tours, or to dine at the Gabriel Archer Tavern for a memorable farm-to-table dining experience. The Tavern prides itself on sourcing locally grown ingredients from the half-acre product garden onsite and local farmers.

Williamsburg Salt Spa

You probably are unaware that soaking in a salt can improve your health. Fifteen tons of Himalayan and Polish salt make up the Salt Cave at the spa. Visitors can float in the tanks or sit in the cave while the body absorbs minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium, and potassium. A doctor in Poland discovered the link between people who worked in the mine near salts and better health. Get ready to breathe in deeply, relax and soak the day away.

Williamsburg is chock full of fun and unusual activities for the whole family, and many of these activities are off the beaten path. Book at stay at the Westgate Historic Williamsburg and you’ll have the best of both worlds – sophisticated accommodations and access to activities. Act like a local and stay entertained while you’re in the city; visit these secret spots for a true Williamsburg experience.
